The core question of this article is: how can we take account of the future and future generations if our knowledge of the future is so sparse? The importance of the future is discussed within the framework of our concept of time. After that it is argued that future generations do not constitute a new, let alone unique, element in the debate on the future. Two different routes to acquire knowledge about the future and prepare for the future are described. (...) Both reflect facts and values of the present and the past instead of giving an accurate picture of the future. Finally the view is defended that future -focused activity should be based to a greater extent on durable principles. Some of these durable principles are presented and discussed. (shrink)

Today, sustainable development is generally accepted as a guiding principle. The present relation societies have with the natural environment is considered as being not-sustainable. However this presupposes some idea about the quality of the environment and of activities affecting the environment and, as a consequence, of the quality of life. In this article I defend the proposition that the limited progress made with respect to the environment – despite all the good intentions – could be due to a potential conflict (...) between ' quality ' and sustainable development. In other words: our interpretation of the concept of ' quality ' is not compatible with the aims of sustainability. Some consequences for research and policy of accepting this proposition are discussed. (shrink)

Food consumption has been identified as a realm of key importance for progressing the world towards more sustainable consumption overall. Consumers have the option to choose organic food as a visible product of more ecologically integrated farming methods and, in general, more carefully produced food. This study aims to investigate the choice for organic from a cultural–historical perspective and aims to reveal the food philosophy of current organic consumers in The Netherlands. A concise history of the organic food movement is (...) provided going back to the German Lebensreform and the American Natural Foods Movement. We discuss themes such as the wish to return to a more natural lifestyle, distancing from materialistic lifestyles, and reverting to a more meaningful moral life. Based on a number of in-depth interviews, the study illustrates that these themes are still of influence among current organic consumers who additionally raised the importance of connectedness to nature, awareness, and purity. We argue that their values are shared by a much larger part of Dutch society than those currently shopping for organic food. Strengthening these cultural values in the context of more sustainable food choices may help to expand the amount of organic consumers and hereby aid a transition towards more sustainable consumption. Racism is again a burning issue in our country. One may define racism as the conviction that not all humans are equal, but that some are ‘worthier’ than others. Usually those who are regarded as ‘unworthy humans’ are not treated on par with the rest. The ‘othering’ of humans in the Western world did not commence in the 16th, 17th, 18th or 19th centuries. It is argued that the roots of racism in the Western world date back to the 1st (...) century CE when the early Christians severed their ties with the Jewish people and their religion, and started humiliating and denigrating them. Traces of this can be found in the New Testament in inter alia John 8:44, Revelation 2:9 and 3:9. The Jewish people and their synagogues were associated with the Devil. However, Paul also contributed to the anti-Judaism sentiments of early Christians. He argued that the gospel superseded the law. This eventually led to the conviction that Christianity superseded Judaism, and that Jews and Judaism ranked lower than Christians and Christianity. These beliefs created fertile soil for the development of racism in the Western world. The article presents a brief overview of the history of Christianity, how it developed, how it became the state religion of the Roman Empire and the dominant religion in the Western world, and how the religious convictions fed into the sociopolitical and economic policies of the Western world. The article delivers a plea for accepting the view that all religions are human constructs and that their adherents need to meet the ‘other’ on an equal footing. The Western world especially needs to look at how Christianity contributed to the way it treated other people during the course of history. (shrink)

A number of authors have noted that vagueness engenders degrees of belief, but that these degrees of belief do not behave like subjective probabilities. So should we countenance two different kinds of degree of belief: the kind arising from vagueness, and the familiar kind arising from uncertainty, which obey the laws of probability? I argue that we cannot coherently countenance two different kinds of degree of belief. Instead, I present a framework in which there is a single notion of degree (...) of belief, which in certain circumstances behaves like a subjective probability assignment and in other circumstances does not. The core idea is that one’s degree of belief in a proposition P is one’s expectation of P’s degree of truth. (shrink)

In April 2002 a new law regarding euthanasia came into effect in the Netherlands. This law holds that euthanasia remains a criminal offence unless it is performed by a physician who acts according to six specified rules of due care and reports the case to a review committee. The six rules of due care are similar to those of the previous regulation and are largely based on jurisprudence. Completely new, however, is the article concerning a competent patient who has written (...) an advance directive requesting euthanasia under certain circumstances. The law stipulates that a physician may act according to that written request, as long as he or she fulfils all other rules of due care. The author defends the view that these requests are neither feasible nor ethically justifiable, and presents both moral and practical arguments for this, claiming that for consistency reasons one cannot act on the basis of a written statement and fulfil the other rules of due care at the same time. The author also examines a difficult case of a demented, severely depressed woman who had written a living will requesting euthanasia before she became demented. (shrink)

Anticipant par une dizaine d’années le vécu de notre présent mondialement pandémique, (...) le film de Soderbergh met en scène la monstruosité inexorable du virus, avec le chaos, la dépression universelle et l’agressivité qui en résultent, – illustrant ainsi comment le quotidien se transforme en une invivable dystopie. Cependant /u-topie/ et /dys-topie/ s’entrelacent et se reconfigurent dans une dynamique dialectique : De même que le passé (rétrospectivement) utopique contenait déjà le code de sa propre auto-destruction, de même le présent (prospectivement) dystopique engendre endurance et lutte à mort pour sur-vivre, ne serait-ce que dans un mode d’être différent du passé perdu et du présent mortel. Ce faisant, comme le montre notre analyse, Soderbergh surprend par la dimension féministe de son film. (shrink)

Het Leids-Haags Allegorieënlexicon toont nieuwe perspectieven op de maatschappelijke werkelijkheid met een actuele duiding van vijftig kernthema’s uit de wetenschap. De auteurs zijn de duale promovendi en hun promotores van Leiden University Dual PhD Centre The Hague. Ze worden daarbij geïnspireerd door de metafoor van de grot van Plato: Waar ben ik? Waar sta ik? Welk beeld zie ik? Hoe kan ik dat begrijpen? Er ontstaan beeldende voorstellingen van begrippen waarin op zoek wordt gegaan naar de centrale gedachten die ten (...) grondslag liggen aan die begrippen. Zo wordt de veranderende wereld waargenomen met het besef dat we nooit kunnen weten of we de gehele werkelijkheid kunnen zien of begrijpen. De waarneming is afhankelijk van de zichtpositie die de waarnemer inneemt. Zo ontstaan verbeeldingen van waarnemingen van ons menselijk bestaan. Zoals: assimilatie, creativiteit, gender, kunstenaarschap, magistraat, participatie, regels, tragedie en verzorgingsstaat. Eerst wordt actuele literatuur besproken. Daarna volgt discussie. Tenslotte neemt de auteur positie in. Medical electives have long been part of the undergraduate curriculum, and many students choose to undertake a placement in a developing country. In countries where healthcare provision is hugely underresourced, students have found themselves under pressure to exceed their role. They have been expected to diagnose and treat patients without direct supervision from a qualified doctor. Some have found themselves running clinics and wards; others have found themselves to be the most qualified person available.1,2The British Medical Journal believes students should (...) not take on the role of a qualified doctor, “irrespective of any encouragement which students may receive from members of the host organisations to which they are attached”.3 This includes not diagnosing, prescribing, or treating any patient without strict clinical supervision. They feel that students fail to appreciate the dangers of treatment, particularly where familiar medical problems are complicated by unfamiliar poverty. The practice of coercive measures in psychiatry is controversial. Although some have suggested that it may be acceptable if patients are a danger to others or to themselves, others committed themselves to eliminate it. Ethical, legal and clinical considerations become more complex when the mental incapacity is temporary and when the coercive measures serve to restore autonomy. We discuss these issues, addressing the conflict between autonomy and beneficence/non-maleficence, human dignity, the experiences of patients and the effects of coercive measures. We (...) argue that an appeal to respect autonomy and/or human dignity cannot be a sufficient reason to reject coercive measures. All together, these ethical aspects can be used both to support and to reject a non-seclusion approach. The total lack of controlled trials about the beneficial effects of coercive measures in different populations however, argues against the use of coercive measures. (shrink)

Rotating machinery produces vibrations depending upon the design of the rotor systems as well as any faults or uncertainties in the machine that can increase the vibrations of such systems. This study illustrates the effectiveness of using surrogate modeling based on kriging in order to predict the vibrational behavior of a complex flexible rotor in the presence of uncertainties. The basic idea of kriging is to predict unknown values of a function by using a small size set of known data. (...) The kriging estimation is based on a weighted average of the known values of the function in the neighborhood of the point for which the value of the function has to be calculated. The crucial dependence of a kriging predictor versus the correlation functions and different orders will be illustrated. This paper also shows that reducing the number of samples required to have predictive models can be achieved by performing an initial understanding of the mechanical system of interest and by considering certain characteristics directly deriving from the physics of the problem studied. This article provides the first edition of a series of eight Quaestiones de secretis mulierum by John Buridan. The introduction discusses the manuscript tradition and the relationship between Buridan’s quaestiones and pseudo-Albertus Magnus’ treatise De secretis mulierum, concluding that Buridan’s questions constitute a genuine commentary on pseudo-Albert’s text. Specifically, the eight questions by Buridan seem to be an extensive elaboration on the preface and on the first chapter of pseudo-Albert’s text.

There have been two main lines in the literature on restricted games: the first line was started by Myerson (1977) that studied graph-restricted games an the second one was initiated by Faigle (1989). The present paper provides a unified way to look on the literature and establishes connections between the two different lines on restricted games. The strength and advantages of this unified approach becomes clear in the study of the inheritance of the convexity from the game to the restricted (...) game where an interesting result by Nouweland and Borm (1991) on the convexity of graph-restricted games is turned into a direct consequence of the corresponding result by Faigle (1989), by means of this relation. In der holländischen Umgangssprache hat das Wort « Humor » eine wenig bestimmte Bedeutung. Es schliesst das Komische und allen Arten von Witz und Schertz ein. Diese Vieldeutigkeit ist zum Teile begründet in dem schillernden Charakter des humoristischen Phänomens. In der jetzigen Untersuchung befragen wir den Humor auf seinen wesentlichen Gehalt. Solche Analyse des Humors soll sich nicht von vornherein zu einem ästhetischen, psychologischen, ethischen oder soziologischen Ausgangspunkt entschliessen ; wir versuchen den Humor phänomenologisch gegen ihn verwandte Erscheinungen abzugrenzen. Zunächst (...) befragen wir den « Geist » des geistreichen Witzes. Dieser Geist, von den Französen Esprit genannt, ist der « Geist des Komischen », in dem Sinne, dass in ihm einer der Wesenszüge des Komischen seine letzte Vervollkommnung findet. Der geistreiche Witz ist ein intellektualistisch kühles Spiel mit Wert und Gegenwert ; er enthüllt plötzlich und ohne Mitgefühl ein Paradoxen. In dem Hinweis auf das Absurde liegt seine Affinität zum Humor. Der Humor ist aber weniger nüchtern, nicht so zugespitzt, sondern gemütlicher und freundlicher. Der Esprit führt nicht zum herzlichen Lachen, weil er das Gemüt nicht berührt. Eine Analyse des Lachens zeigt uns dieses Phänomen als eine Krise des Verhaltens . Lachen ist die Kapitulation einer Person vor der Unmöglichkeit eines Kontrastes, das dem Verhalten keinen Halt bietet. Im Lachen verlieren wir unsere Haltung und Selbstbeherrschung. Gerade diese Explosivität des Lachens ist es, die dem Humor abgeht. Der Lacher macht sich keine Sorge um den Wert, den er verlacht ; er lacht schlechtweg, weil der Kontrast zwischen der Erscheinung und ihrer Norm ihn dazu veranlasst. Der lachende Mensch sieht nicht, dass der lächerliche Kontrast in einer tieferen Diskrepanz begründet ist : in der Diskrepanz zwischen dem realen Sein und der idealen Norm des Menschen. Es ist vor allem der tragische Blick, der diese fundamentale Diskrepanz entdeckt. Der tragische Mensch geht eben an diesem Wissen zugrunde. Seine Auseinandersetzung mit der Welt und mit sich selbst entfaltet sich in der Verstimmung, in der Einsamkeit und Trostlosigkeit. Es gelingt dem tragischen Menschen nicht, sich im Lachen von der Zerrissenheit der Existenz zu distanzieren. Das Lachen bietet dem Lachenden die Möglichkeit, Abstand zum Kontrast zu gewinnen. Es kann daher als Zugang zum Humor fungieren, der die Diskrepanz erkennt, sie aber im Gegensatz zum Tragischen, heiter relativiert. Der Humor spricht vom Absurden ohne Feindseligkeit oder Trauer, aber auch ohne Ausgelassenheit. Er hüllt sich jedoch nicht in der Indifferenz. Der Humor findet sich in einer gehobenen Stimmung beheimatet, und er verhält sich sympathisch zum Mitmenschen und zur Existenz. Sein Zeichen ist daher das Lächeln, diese Mim ik des Geistes , eine harmlose Gebärde, die eine Suspension der inneren Haltung wie der äusseren Aktivität verrät. Der humoristisch gestimmte Mensch enthält sich von jeder Stellungnahme ; mit Vergnügen zeigt er auf die Widersinnigkeit des Lebens hin, ohne sich mit dieser auseinanderzusetzen. Er verweigert sich, den andern Menschen bei seiner schwachen Stelle zu nehmen. Der Humor beabsichtigt also keinen Zweck. Er blüht auf wie ein Geschenk des zufriedenen Zumuteseins. Er zeigt den Menschen im Spiel mit seinem eigenen paradoxalen Dasein. Seiner Neutralität wegen, und der darin implizierten Ambiguität, ist Humor so schwierig zu fassen. Der für den Humor unzugängliche Zuhörer ist ja immer dazu geneigt, ihn aus einer bestimmten Haltung zu deuten, und sucht also im Humor Urteil oder Angriff, Mitleid oder Schertz. Der Humor setzt sich nicht mit den stellungnehmenden Anderen auseinander, er ist nicht in der Alltäglichkeit der Auseinandersetzung und des Gespräches zu Hause, sondern fordert den Mitmenschen auf zu einem gemeinsamen Blick auf den Kontrast, seine Tiefe und seine Relativität. Gerade deshalb fassen der religiöse und der tragische Mensch ihn als einen leichtsinnigen Schertz auf, der sich dem Ernste des Lebens entzieht. Sie haben dann eben nicht verstanden, dass das Wesen des Humors in seiner Feinheit und Zartheit liegt. Diese Feinheit ist die Feinheit einer Grenze. Es ist das Wesen des Humors, sich auf der Grenze zwischen dem Komischen und dem Tragischen zu befinden. Der Humor weder lacht noch weint, er lächelt froh über die Paradoxalität des Daseins. Darum ist er auch ungenügsam als dauernde Lebenshaltung. (shrink)
